Medical Microbiology is a branch of medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. In addition, this field of science studies various clinical applications of microbes for the improvement of health. There are four kinds of microorganisms that cause infectious disease: bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses and one type of infectious protein called a prion.

A medical microbiologist studies the characteristics of pathogens, their modes of transmission, mechanisms of infection and growth.helping in identification of pathogens and suggesting treatment options. Other tasks may include the identification of potential health risks to the community or monitoring the evolution of potentially virulent or resistant strains of microbes, educating the community and assisting in the design of health practices. They may also assist in preventing or controlling epidemics and outbreaks of disease.

The Mycology Unit provides a definitive identification service on fungi and yeasts isolated from patient samples. Diagnosis of intestinal parasites is confirmed by the recovery of protozoan trophozoites and cysts, helminth eggs and larvae in the clinical parasitology laboratory. Microscopic examination of faeces is essential for the recognition and identification of intestinal parasites.

Serology is the scientific study of serum and other body fluids. In practice, the term usually refers to the diagnostic identification of antibodies in the serum. Such antibodies are typically formed in response to an infection (against a given microorganism), against other foreign proteins (in response, for example, to a mismatched blood transfusion), or to one’s own proteins (in instances of autoimmune disease). Serological tests may be performed for diagnostic purposes when an infection is suspected, in rheumatic illnesses, and in many other situations, such as checking an individual’s blood type. Serology blood tests help to diagnose patients with certain immune deficiencies associated with the lack of antibodies, such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia. In such cases, tests for antibodies will be consistently negative. There are several serology techniques that can be used depending on the antibodies being studied. These include: ELISA, agglutination, precipitation, complement-fixation, and fluorescent antibodies.

Immunology and serology is an advanced science dealing with how the human immune system organized, function and the different types of serological techniques. It is a very vast subject covering a wide area of technology.

The Prime aim of the Dept.of Microbiology is to make the Medical students aware of the science of microbes and empower them with the art of diagnosing and treating infectious diseases. In addition to undergraduate teaching the department concentrates on the detection and identification of infectious agents in the laboratory section followed by determination of susceptibility to Antimicrobial agents. More than 18000 serology tests and 17500 Bacterial culture and sensitivity are performed annually. We have separate Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Serology and Mycology sections in the laboratory.

Department of Microbiology was established in year 2009 with late Dr. S. Ganeshan as the Head of the department and Dr.Jose P Augustine, Dr. Anoop Sinha, Dr. Tandra Chadha as faculty members.

Presently the department is headed by Professor Dr. Jose P Augustine. The other faculty members include Dr. Regha I.R(Professor), Dr. Deepa H(Associate Professor), Dr. Anooja P M(Assistant Professor), Dr. Arun Prasad H(Tutor), Dr. Aswathi C R(Tutor), Dr. Gokul Anil Kumar (Tutor), Dr. Paul Therattil(Tutor).

Medical Microbiology deals with diagnosis of infectious diseases and detection of autoimmune and immunodeficiency conditions. The department of microbiology offers diagnostic laboratory services to the patients. The department also handles various academic programs on microbiology. We have separate Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Serology, Immunology, Parasitology and Mycobacteriology (Tuberculosis) section in the laboratory. The department also conducts routine surveillance for infection control measures in various high risk areas like intensive care unit (Cardiology, Medical, Surgical & Pediatric) dialysis unit, OT complex and other hospital premises. Our Molecular Diagnostic Lab has been assessed and accredited in accordance with the standard ISO 15189:2012 by NABL. The aim of department of microbiology of SNIMS is to provide quality training to students and accurate microbiology diagnostic services to aid and guide clinicians in the appropriate management of infectious diseases.

DIAGNOSTIC SERCVICE AND SPECIALITY LABS

Forensic Medicine is medical specialty which deals with the application of medical knowledge in administration of justice. A Forensic expert deal with crime scene investigation, post mortem work and medicolegal cases like examination of rape victim and rape accused, examination for issue of drunkenness and injury certificates, examination of person and evidence for age estimation etc. In course of work a forensic expert is also involved in expert opinions and court evidences.

The department imparts comprehensive knowledge to the IInd and IIIrd MBBS Students in the subject Forensic Medicine, Toxicology & Medical Jurisprudence. This is during the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Semesters of their study period.

The Department started functioning in the College in the year 2010 when Prof. Dr. A. Ramachandran took charge as Head of Department in Forensic Medicine department and Chairman of Research Committee in the college.

The Department imparts teaching and practical training in the Subject Forensic Medicine, Toxicology & medical Jurisprudence to the MBBS Students. Practical classes are taken on various aspects of medicolegal autopsy and preparation of various medicolegal certificates. These include Post Mortem Certificates, Wound certification, Potency certification, examination for certification of Sexual offence victim, Certification of cases of Drunkenness, examination of skeletal remains examination of subjects for age estimation and certification.

Practical classes also include study of ossification data by taking x-ray films, study of infant death cases, demonstration of various specimens related to forensic pathology, bones, snakes, toxicology specimens (including poisonous plants), ammunitions, weapons, demonstration of various slides of medicolegal importance.

Previous Batches of MBBS Students have witnessed various medicolegal autopsies. (This was from General Hospital, Ernakulam and Victoria Hospital attached to Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute and General Hospital).

Smart class room facility is provided in the demonstration rooms and lecture halls with audio visual aids for teaching purpose.

Department also offers medicolegal consultations on demand/request.

MUSEUM

The Department has an excellent Museum with good collection of wet specimens, human bones, toxicology specimens, including poisonous plants, snakes, weapons, ammunition specimens, entire human skeleton, microscopic slides of medicolegal importance, X-ray films for demonstrating ossification data, besides various models, charts and photographs.

We have vast collection of Medical books pertaining to different subjects. Latest editions of few more books will be added to the library collection shortly. The department library collection is update with latest editions yearly.

MORTUARY

The Department has a well equipped Mortuary in the college campus with all facilities to conduct medico-legal autopsies / pathological autopsies. The department has qualified and competent staffs, if there is need to conduct autopsies. Since our college is a self-financing college, Govt. has not given permission to conduct medico-legal autopsy.

Health is a state of complete physical ,mental and social well-being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity. Community medicine is prevention of disease and promotion of health by peoples participation.

Community Medicine department in SNIMS was established in 2009. The department has been training MBBS students since then. Two post graduate seats in Community medicine has been allotted to the Department in 2021.

Faculty in the department are qualified doctorates in medicine in the field of community health. Each faculty has further diversified in an area that interests them and this has enabled the varying research profile of the department. Trained to be primary care physicians, researchers and administrators with the necessary clinical skills, knowledge of epidemiological and management principles, faculty have the ability to apply this knowledge for the betterment of the community. They bring about policy reforms and are on the forefront in times of disasters and largescale pandemics

Physiology is the study of normal functions of the human body. Knowledge of physiology is necessary for understanding medicine. A medical student comprehends abnormalities associated with diseases and is well prepared to plan an appropriate treatment regimen

We admit 150 students in the first phase of MBBS. Teaching is according to CBME curriculum. Teaching methods include lectures, group discussions, self-directed learning and simulation learning. Practical classes are conducted in haematology, clinical and research laboratories. MBBS students get to learn the first steps of patient care during their clinical physiology classes. Students get to experience the various tests used in healthcare system like ECG, PFT, and Perimetry. Students in paramedical courses like DMLT and DOTAT are also being trained by the department faculty. We encourage our students to perform well in both academics and extra-curricular activities.

Biochemistry is the study of biomolecules and their transformations. Biochemistry deals with the structure, functions and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water which provide the structure of cells and perform many of the functions associated with life. The Department is involved in teaching the MBBS and Paramedical courses and provides round the clock lab services. The Clinical Biochemistry lab is under the Department of Biochemistry and routine and special tests are performed in the lab.

Adverse drug monitoring Centre

The institute has been recognized as an ADR Monitoring Centre by the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI). The Pharmacovigilance committee conducts periodic review of the adverse drug events, initiates education programmes and has taken the lead in formulating ADE management protocols. We report ADEs to World Health Organization monitoring centre at Upsala, Sweden, through Vigiflow software of PvPI

Drugs and Therapeautic committee

A faculty of the department is one of the members of the hospital Drugs and Therapeutic committee which provides guidance in aspects related to the use of drugs in the hospital so as to ensure quality patient care.

Central Animal House

We have license for central animal facility. The facility is equipped for small animal experimentation with quarantine and experimental rooms for rats, rabbits and guinea pig. The animal species are being used for various research projects approved by the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC).

The department Museum contains sample drugs, pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic charts, photographs of medicinal plants, plant products, charts depicting history of pharmacology to aid illustrative teaching. It has a capacity to seat of 50 students. It is well-equipped with audio-visual aids including OHP & LCD projectors.

A dedicated room with essential computer (25 Nos.) supports is available for Animal exeperiments via Ex –Pharma software

LIBRARY

The department library has 82 books on medical pharmacology and allied specialties for UG, PG and faculty reference.

The subject of Pathology deals with abnormal changes seen in our organs affected due to various diseases. Changes observed are noted down and confirmed under the microscope thereafter – which is what ‘Morphology’ is all about. Changes documented are studied and a final diagnosis is made which is conveyed to the clinician. This will help the clinician plan an appropriate treatment regimen. A Pathologist also performs FNAC, Bone marrow aspiration, and Peripheral Smear reporting. In addition, teaching MBBS students and students of other courses where Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is part of the curriculum.

Demonstration rooms have TV monitors with internet facility. Museum is moved to a more spacious area on the first floor and is shared with Forensic medicine. Our labs have binocular microscopes. Many of our faculty have completed ‘Revised Basic Medical Education Technology Course’ and AETCOM courses and CISP training

VISION

From the year 2019, emphasis is on CBME syllabus that is expected to produce high quality IMGs in the coming years. This new scheme also allows teachers to reorient and reinvent themselves.

BLOOD BANK

The Blood Bank at SNIMS has been functioning since 2010 and a component separation facility was added in 2013. The blood bank is licensed under Drugs Control Department, Govt. of India and undergoes external quality assurance from CMC Vellore. SNIMS blood bank caters to outpatients and inpatients in the hospital as well as those of nearby hospitals also. We ensure safe collection of blood from healthy donors in a clean and pleasant ambience. All donor units are screened for transfusion transmissible diseases using current technology. Safe storage and timely issue of quality assured components including Packed Red cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet Concentrate and Cryoprecipitate is ensured. Blood bank is manned by qualified and experienced technicians and functions 24×7 on all days including Sundays and public holidays. Indoor blood donation camps are organized at intervals to promote voluntary blood donation.

CENTRAL LAB

The central lab of SNIMS was established in 2007. Central lab now functions 24×7 to cater to the needs of inpatients and outpatients. Patients are received in the lab reception area and immediately directed to the sample collection room where samples for tests in the different departments are collected. The lab has state of the art equipment which helps in issuing quick and reliable reports. Routine and special investigations are carried out by qualified personnel under supervision of doctors from the respective departments. Internal and External Quality Assurance programs are carried out ensuring the quality of the reports. Reports are issued at the Lab reception counter and also uploaded electronically to the hospital data system within appropriate turnaround time. Electronic records of patient records are maintained in the hospital data management system long term.

Anatomy being the cornerstone of Medical science, a clear and comprehensive understanding of human anatomy is quintessential as it is the science of the macro and micro structure of the human body. It is Anatomy that provides the precise idea of position, shape, size, relations, structure, and function of all the structures present in the body. This is the basic and most important constituent of medical science.
