Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SNIMS)

Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SNIMS) is the first Medical College of Gurudeva Charitable Trust (GCT) founded by a group of Philanthropic followers of Sree Narayana Guru, the great saint and social reformer of Kerala. The goal of the institution is to provide top class medical education and quality health care at affordable cost.

The SNIMS is located 14 kms away from Nedumbassery Cochin International Airport and is placed in-between national highways NH544 and NH66 at Chalakka. This beautiful campus is spread over 46 acres, away from the noisy congested city life.

The Academic Block accommodates Principal, Vice Principal, academic section, administrative section, student’s common rooms, pre-clinical and para-clinical departments, lecture halls with audio visual amenities, examination hall/auditorium, central library, digital library with 24 hours internet connection, large conference hall, skill lab, central research lab, MET unit, HR section, Accounts section etc.

Hospital block has a 560 bed hospital, a range of clinical specialities, casualty services, emergency care services, CCU, ICU, Operation theater, Cath lab, blood bank, reception, pharmacy, drug store, registration, IT, MRD, PR services, MS office, NS office and allied offices. This block also houses lecture halls, day care center for children, diabetes clinic, cafeteria, speciality clinics, health check-up units etc.

SNIMS campus provides separate hostels for boys and girls with bath attached rooms in addition to in-house accommodation for faculty members. It also has a well-toned playground and has fully equipped GYMs to keep students physically fit.

Students of SNIMS have been returning excellent results in the MBBS examination thereby reflecting the exemplary standard of the academic coaching we provide here through eminent and distinguished faculty members. SNIMS bagged first Ranks in 2014 , 2017 and 2018 in Final MBBS Examination; a second topper in First MBBS Examination held in 2020; Second University topper in II MBBS Examination held in 2015 and third University topper in first MBBS Examination of 2014 .In the year 2016, our students stood first ,second and third in Anatomy in Kerala state.

We started MBBS classes in the year 2009 with a strength of 100 students and our first batch appeared for the final examination in 2014. Of these, students allotted by the Government were 50 and the remaining 50 students were filled by students who passed the entrance examination conducted by the management with the approval of the Government. We are blessed that we have experienced faculty from all over India, who have excelled in teaching and research in their respective disciplines.

We believe in all round growth of the student in the academic front as well as becoming good human beings. The results of the examinations show the passion and dedication of our teachers and the hard work of the students. Sports and literary activities are encouraged to inculcate good habits. Our students since then are contributing to the development of society.

SNIMS Campus is situated in about 46 acres of land in a Rural area. The medical college is housed in a unitary campus attached to a teaching hospital. Our infrastructure has room for future expansion.

Separate hostel facilities for boys and girls are provided where spacious rooms are available, along with common rooms, computer rooms, gymnasium and facilities for indoor games. Canteen facilities are excellent where good quality food is served. Health Insurance is mandatory for all students. The Principal and a dedicated team comprising wardens ensure regular supervision and provide security.

Our institute has a responsive administrative organization. They provide the required infrastructure support. Spacious College Council Room, Office, Skill Lab, Central Research Lab, Central Library, Lecture Theater, Auditorium and Medical Education Unit are all part of this block. Separate Common Room for Male and Female students with attached toilets are also available in each floor.

As per MCI norms and instructions issued by Kerala University of Health Sciences No: 8747/AC1/Gen A2/KUHS/2016 dated 7th February, College Council is reconstituted and the members are as follows (2017).

FUNCTIONS

The College council looks after the matters of academics, student activities, student discipline, staff issues and development of the Institution. It also has the role to establish and monitor systems and processes to set strategic direction, identify and manage risk, record other activities such as:

  • Drawing up details of curriculum and training programs and other academic matters.
  • Enforcement of discipline on the campus.
  • Organizing interdepartmental meetings - Statistical meetings and Clinico pathological meetings. Review on research activities too are held in our Institution regularly.

The Library is located at the Administrative block. It offers access to an invaluable collection of Medical Books, Journals, Videos and CD/DVD’s. Library has new and updated reference materials. The library is computerized, which makes it easy to access relevant information.. Library functions throughout the year from 9.00am to 9.00pm on all days except during national holidays. On Sundays the library is open from 10.00 am to 4.00pm. The central library is equipped with 8433 Books, 4508 titles, 1108 Bound volumes, 108 Journals, 300 CD’s , 4 News papers . It has access to online databases and e-journals. The library is using ‘Koha’ 20.11 version for managing all day to day library activities. The library has a total area of 1600sq.m. spread on the first floor of the Academic block. The central library is air conditioned. Library has a Journal room, Librarian room, e-library, Resident’s area, Staff reading room andExternal reading room. The central library provides books and journals for 23 department libraries.

Vision and mission

SNIMS library supports the learning phase of our students and provides recent updates to the faculty in enhancing knowledge. Library also helps teaching community of SNIMS College and Hospital with excellent services and textbook collections. The library is a unique center for medical learning and aims to develop students and staff of SNIMS with updated knowledge.

  • The library has 8433 books as on 20.01.2022 in medicine and allied subjects which are available for reference to the users of the library.

  • Reference section
  • All the important books are arranged in a subject wise order. These are accessible for reference but not allowed to be taken out.

  • New Arrival Section
  • Newly procured books are displayed in ‘new arrival’ rack in the reference section of the central library

  • Question paper collection
  • The central library has previous year question papers for UG & PG courses for reference of students and teachers of the college. Question papers from 2009 are made available.

  • Journals and periodical section

    About 100 Journals from national and international publishers are subscribed every year. They are displayed in the display racks in subject wise alphabetical order. 76 Indian and 32 International journals are subscribed.

  • Back volume section
  • 1108 back volumes are arranged subject wise in this area inside the journal room.

  • WHO publications
  • A separate action of WHO publications is maintained in the journal section of the library. WHO publications available in the library are displayed in the racks. WHO publications are subscribed every year.

  • Online Journals
  • Online journals are available through J gate plus. There are 1782 national and 15241 international journals available. This facility is provided to all the users of the library.

  • Internet Lab
  • The Internet lab of the central library has 40 systems. All these systems are equipped with internet facilities. Users make use of the lab for accessing online journals and for other learning activities.

  • Various Sections for Reading
  • There are separate Staff reading rooms, Resident’s room, etc. for reading. Users of various categories can use appropriate areas for reading. A quiet and calm environment is assured with all facilities for efficient reading.

  • Prep-Ladder
  • The library has a free subscription of Prep-Ladder – smart library. This facility of 5 tabs containing audio visual classes are provided by Prep-Ladder publishers. Students are making great use of this facility. It constitutes entrance preparation classes and video classes for medical students.

  • Library provides reprographic services to all the SNIMS community. Students make use of these services for taking printouts and Photostats enhance their learning.

  • External Reading Room
  • Library has an external reading room of 150 capacity. It is air conditioned and a well maintained learning environment is provided for students there.

Koha

Koha – Library management software is used in the library to perform all the day to day library activities. All works of circulation, category, acquisitions etc. are performed through this software.

Auditorium/Examination Hall (Multi-purpose) is provided in the second level of Academic Block. This is done as per the requirements of the then MCI.

Central photographic and audiovisual sections with accommodation for studio, dark room, enlarging and Photostat work are provided in the ground level of Academic Block. Accommodation is provided for Artist and Medical Illustrators and Modellers.

Well equipped Central Research Laboratory is provided in the Medical College which is under the control of the Principal of the college.

5 Air conditioned, gallery type Lecture Theaters are available in this institution out of which 3 have seating capacity for 150 students each. Another one is in the Hospital side of capacity for 150 students. The audio-visual aids including Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, LCD Projector and microphone are also provided. All the departments share these Lecture Halls in an organised manner. E-Class facility is also available.

The management takes good care of the same and encourages students to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. This exercise helps students to concentrate and stay focussed on academic activities. A well equipped gymnasium and sports ground are provided for students within the college campus. The Institution has top sports facilities that include BasketBall Court, Football Court & Badminton Court. A qualified physical instructor gives support and required guidance and supervises all activities.

Biomedical waste is handled by IMAGE (Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-friendly). The Central Incineration Plant is available as per rules.

The Medical Education Unit (MEU) of SNIMS helps the faculty to polish their skills in the art of teaching. The focus is not only on teaching, but also on developing the complex roles of being mentors, assessors, curriculum designers, facilitators and role models. The unit is equipped with teaching and training materials on various subjects of Medical Education Technology. Many faculty members have been trained in the Medical Education Unit.

The College and Hospital are Interlinked with telephone & Intercom System. Unlimited Internet Facility 24x7, of 2 MBPS speed with a BSNL leased line. Highly secured servers are provided. A well developed Hospital Information System (HIS) is available. The IT Department is responsible for regular updating of the website of our institution. We have recently extended service to the examination room.

Cafeteria is situated inside the hospital. The food and snacks served in the cafeteria are freshly made. The canteen is adequately staffed with cooks, maintenance and administrative personnel and caters to all patients, patient’s relatives, doctors, interns and residents. Both veg and non-veg food is made available in an hygienic environment. Prices are reasonable. Separate seating arrangements for doctors and staff are provided.

The energy supply of 400 KVA for the institution is obtained through Kerala State Electricity Board. To ensure uninterrupted power supply the Campus is provided with generator backup 1125 KVA (one 500 KVA, two 250 KVA & one 125 KVA) are located in the College as well as in hospital. All electrical arrangements are controlled and maintained by the electrical department of the institute headed by an Electrical Engineer. Electricians are available round the clock to address concerns if any

Providing safe drinking water, basic sanitation & hygiene is our prime concern. Adequate sanitary facilities and safe drinking water facilities are provided for the staff & students in all sections. For the maintenance work, the plumbers are always available.

This ensures good quality potable water supply to college, hospital, hostel etc.

Well managed STP to treat the sewage and to make sure that the effluent water is bacteria free.

We have a central workshop for repairing mechanical, electrical, Air Conditioners and refrigeration equipment on the campus. It is managed by qualified personnel.

ANATOMY
  • Demonstration Room – Two demonstration rooms fitted with strip chairs, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 60 students.
  • Dissection Hall – to accommodate at least 100 students. It is well-ventilated with exhaust fans. Additional Learning tools aids are provided. Embalming room has 3 storage tanks and a cold storage room comes with space for storage of 10-12 dead bodies.
  • The Histology Laboratory has appropriate work benches fitted with water taps, sinks, cupboards for microscope storage. Electric points are provided for 60 students. There is also a preparation room for technicians and storage of equipment.
  • Research - There is a research laboratory for conducting research activities under faculty supervision.
  • Museum- Department has a museum with mounted specimens
  • The Departmental Library-cum-seminar room has 113 textbooks and books for reference.
PHYSIOLOGY
  • Demonstration Room fitted with strip chairs, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 50-60 students.
  • Practical rooms- 3 laboratories with adequate accommodation are provided to accommodate 60 students.
  • Amphibian laboratory (one)- Provided with working tables and one preparation room.

    Mammalian laboratory (one)- Provided with four tables and one preparation room.

    Human Laboratories:

    • Hematology Lab : Provided with working tables and one preparation room.
    • Clinical Physiology Laboratory provided with 8 tables with mattresses and adjustable hand-end.

BIOCHEMISTRY
  • Demonstration Room has chairs, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 60 students.

  • A research laboratory promotes student and faculty research activities.
PATHOLOGY
  • Demonstration room fitted with Overhead Projector, Slide projector, Television Video and other audiovisual aids, to accommodate at least 60 students.
  • Practical Laboratories for Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology/Cytopathology and for clinical Pathology/Hematology with preparation room is provided.
  • Separate service laboratory for Histopathology, Cytopathology, Hematology. A balance room, store room and a special room for high speed centrifuge are provided. In addition, a washroom is provided with continuous water supply completes the needs
  • Museum- for specimens, charts, models with a seating capacity of at least 25 students. Pathology shares its museum with the Forensic medicine department as approved by NMC. This spacious museum is located on the first floor and contains well mounted specimens accompanied by relevant catalog that has case scenarios and details on morphologic features
  • Autopsy Block - Autopsy room with all facilities is provided.

BLOOD BANK

Blood Bank is situated on the ground floor of the hospital. The Blood Bank caters to the needs of all the patients of the hospital. Apart from whole blood, component separation is also available. Various components like Packed Cells, Fresh Frozen plasma, Cryoprecipitate, Platelets and single donor platelets are available on request.

SNIMS has an air conditioned Blood Bank and it includes:

  • Registration office and Medical Examination Room for selection of donors with suitable furniture and related facilities.
  • Blood collection room.
  • Laboratory for Blood Group serology
  • Facility for the diagnosis of transmissible diseases like hepatitis, syphilis, Malaria, HIV antibodies etc

MICROBIOLOGY
  • Demonstration room- to accommodate at least 60 students is provided.
  • Practical laboratory with a preparation room is provided
  • Separate service laboratories one each for Bacteriology including anaerobic; Serology; Virology; Parasitology; Mycology; Tuberculosis and Immunology are provided.
  • Museum- for specimens, charts, models, with a seating capacity of 25 students provided.

PHARMACOLOGY

ANIMAL HOLDING AREA

The Animal House is a resource center for students and faculty of various medical disciplines. SNIMS has a well established Animal House, registered as per 1274/ac/09/CPCSEA requirements. Animal House has facilities for breeding and maintenance of laboratory animals under standard husbandry conditions. Animals are housed and used for breeding and for conducting experiments for medical research as per rules & regulation of CPCSEA.

SNIMS has Animal House Committee and Animal Ethics Committee for regular monitoring of Animal House besides an Veterinary Officer who is in charge of Animal House. Veterinary clinical services & care are given to all animals housed here.

FORENSIC MEDICINE
  • Demonstration room to accommodate at least 50-60 students.
  • Museum has photographs, statistical charts, specimens arranged properly to boost learning.
  • A laboratory for examination of specimens, tests and Forensic histopathology, Serology, anthropology and toxicology.
  • Autopsy Block –Autopsy room with facilities for cold storage, for cadavers, ante- rooms, washing facilities, with an accommodation capacity of 20-25 students.
  • Department Library-cum-seminar room with at least 80-100 textbooks and reference books
  • Research laboratory for research purposes.
COMMUNITY MEDICINE
  • Demonstration room to accommodate at least 60 students.
  • A laboratory with facilities for the purpose of demonstration of various laboratory practices is provided.

SNIMS has five health centers for training of students in community oriented family based health care.

RHTC Munambam

Separate residential arrangements for boys and girls, interns and faculty with mess facilities are available in RHTC Munambam which is under the full administrative jurisdiction of the medical college. Transportation facility is provided for carrying out field work, teaching and training activities by the department of Community Medicine and other departments (both for staff and students).

URBAN TRAINING HEALTH CENTER

The Urban Health Training Center located at Paravur has all facilities. This center follows statutory guidelines. Students and interns are trained under the administrative control of the Department of Community Medicine. Transportation is always provided to ensure hassle free movement of material and manpower

Hospital

SNIMS is a Teaching Hospital in the coastal belt of Ernakulam District. This institution provides comprehensive medical services and aims to establish itself as a center of excellence. The hospital is located on the roadside and is a tertiary care center for the population living between Ernakulam and Thrissur. However patients from Paravur, Aluva, Mala, Kodungallur and nearby areas are the primary beneficiaries. Our hospital is well equipped with competent doctors in various departments and continues to provide high quality medical care at an affordable price point. The hospital is privileged to have the regular services of eminent consultants in various disciplines. We are committed to offer the most advanced diagnosis and treatment in Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Paediatrics, Dental, Psychiatry and super specialty departments like Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Urology and Pediatric surgery. We have fully equipped ICU services, Operation Theatres and Labour Room. Our medical and nursing staff are selected after close scrutiny and find a mix of seniors with ambitious juniors. Our faculty undergo training sessions and workshops in addition to attending CMEs. Our faculty and staff extend dedicated care. We also cater to RSBY, ECHS and almost all Health Insurance Schemes.

Accommodation is provided for Dean and Medical Superintendent. Computers with internet facilities are provided to several offices for supportive staff and Nursing Superintendent. A well appointed space for visitors is also added.

Both the Outpatient and Inpatient registration and MR Department are fully computerized.

All the required information about facilities and services can be obtained from the Hospital Enquiry round the clock. Appointments to see doctors have to be done after discussion with the enquiry.

Timings : 8AM – 4PM

Registration Counter works from 7.30AM – 4PM. There are separate counters for Old and New cases. Prior appointments can be fixed on the previous day. They will be given preference. Only Emergency cases are allowed out of turn. Payments for all specialties can be made at the OP Billing Counter.

  • The department has necessary facilities along with dedicated faculty having good academic and hospital practice experience. In addition to the OPD & IP services, the department offers 24 hours specialist services in MICU and Emergency Room. The department has speciality clinics on Diabetes, lifestyle diseases, thyroid diseases etc.

  • PEDIATRICS
  • The services of pediatricians are available round the clock. The department has a state of the art Pediatric ICU & NICU, Immunization and Well Baby Clinic and Pediatric Asthma Clinic. A Neurological Developmental Disorders Clinic including Autism and ADHD is functioning

  • TUBERCULOSIS AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES
  • The department undertakes all types of services (Diagnosis, Treatment & Prevention) of Respiratory Diseases. The department has speciality Clinics on Tobacco Smoking Cessation Clinic, Asthma Clinic and Allergy Clinic. Sleep lab is the latest clinic to have been added.

  • DERMATOLOGY
  • It is a speciality with both medical and surgical aspects. All procedures in Dermatology & Cosmetology are being done. There are specialty clinics like Psoriasis clinic, Dermatitis clinic etc.

  • PSYCHIATRY
  • The department takes care of all psychiatry problems of those who are acutely and chronically ill. Department has a De-Addiction center, provides electro convulsive therapy, child guidance clinic and a dementia clinic.

SURGERY AND ALLIED SPECIALITIES
  • GENERAL SURGERY
  • The surgeons are available round the clock. Routine and speciality surgeries are being done. Laparoscopic surgeries are also done. Emergency management & ICU facilities are available.

  • ORTHOPEDICS
  • Replacement surgery is our speciality. We also provide Back-Ache Clinic, Pediatric Clinic etc.

  • OPHTHALMOLOGY
  • A fully equipped OPD, experienced faculty and a dedicated operation theater with facilities for performing ophthalmic procedures provided. Ophthalmology camps & school programs are held on a regular basis.

  • OTO-RHINOLARYNGOLOGY (ENT)
  • The audiology department provides audiology tests. The facilities provided are routine OPD procedures, Nasal Endoscopy, Video Laryngoscopy, Hearing Assessment tests, Neonatal screening for hearing, Speech therapy, Auditory verbal therapy, Headache Clinic, Vertigo Clinic, Voice Disorder Clinic, Snoring Clinic & Hearing aid dispensing etc.

  • OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY
  • The department is committed to provide excellent care to Gynaecological & Obstetric patients in addition to the prevailing specialty clinics. We have services of Gynecologists made available round the clock. The department has separate provision of USG, Colposcopy and Laparoscopy. We run Special Gynaecology Clinic, Well Women Clinic, Adolescent Programs, Awareness Camps etc.

  • RADIO DIAGNOSIS

    OPERATION THEATRE

    The operation theaters are centrally air-conditioned and well equipped. The Operation Theater Unit is provided with facilities as per MCI/NMC Requirements. Two such units are provided for General Surgery, one for ENT, one for Orthopedics; one for Ophthalmology and one for Obstetrics and Gynecology and one for septic cases. One minor operation theater is also provided.

  • Well equipped dental department is available . Dental department is organizing various dental health and evaluation programs for the common public and continuing dental education for dental professionals as well as staff. The department is full fledged as per the MCI Requirement.

There is an independent Central Sterilization unit capable of taking the total work load of operation theaters, laboratories etc. It has adequate equipment like bulk sterilizer with separate ends for loading unsterile material, cold sterilizer, Ethylene oxide sterilizer, freon ethylene instruments and mattress sterilizer, sterile racks, mixers, and trays for instruments etc.

This department works round the clock and all materials, instruments, trays, and dressing material etc. will be supplied whenever required.

Central Laboratory is located in the second level of the Hospital Block. We have state of the art equipment and established infrastructure which makes our reporting accurate. Technology driven and competent professionals have helped in the up-gradation of our laboratory. Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Pathology have facilities for all the routine tests. We have fully automated Arterial Blood Gas Analyzer and Fully automated hormone analyzer in addition to histopathology and immunoassays. All tests for diagnosing infectious diseases and tumor markers are available in our laboratory.

Casualty deals with patients presenting with symptoms of several medical specialties. Attending these patients includes treatment procedures performed on an outpatient basis, transporting patients to examination units and wards, and preparing patients for emergency operations.

The casualty services are under the control of the Chief Casualty Medical Officer. Observation ward is also available. The Resuscitation area is dedicated to the immediate care of patients and victims of cardiac arrest, airway, breathing and circulation compromise. Accommodation for Resuscitation Services includes oxygen supply, access to ventilators and Defibrillator. Casualty has two fully equipped disaster trolleys and provision for taking emergency X-Rays. Other facilities provided include Investigative facilities and an Operation Theater. Adequate sanitary arrangements & drinking water facilities for patients, their attendants and the staff of the department are provided in the respective blocks.

Pharmacy department of the hospital is located so that an easy communication with other departments is possible.

SNIMS Pharmacy is a department of service in this hospital, responsible for the supply of medicines to hospital wards as well as ambulatory patients. The department is headed by professionally competent, legally qualified pharmacist who directly supervises and ensures the correct dispensing & distribution of medicines to in & out patients.

SNIMS provide a Central Hospital Stores for stocking & supply of drugs, equipments etc.. The main function of Central Stores is to store and provide materials to all the clinical and non clinical areas of the hospital required for their smooth functioning.

Well furnished Staff Quarters is provided within the campus as per the MCI Requirement. Water supply, sanitation arrangements and good security for 24 hrs is provided for the Quarter Complex.

The Medical College provides hostel facility for the students within the campus. SNIMS has provision for more than 75% of the total intake of students at a given time. SNIMS Hostel is a seven storied building with 14 rooms each in every floor. Each Hostel room has two or three occupants, book shelf, and cloth cupboards. Each person is provided with a chair and a table. Every floor has a reading room lift facility is also provided. Hostel is provided with a visitors room in the ground floor. Mess facility is also provided. A recreational facility room having T.V. , Gymnasium, Music, Indoor games etc provided.
