Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of biomolecules and their transformations. Biochemistry deals with the structure, functions and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water which provide the structure of cells and perform many of the functions associated with life. Biochemistry encompasses the following branches

  • Metabolism
  • Enzymology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Toxicology
  • Clinical Chemistry

Dr. Asha Augusthy has been heading the department since January 2017.

The Department is involved in teaching the MBBS and Paramedical courses and provides round the clock lab services. The Clinical Biochemistry lab is under the Department of Biochemistry and routine and special tests are performed in the lab.

Routine Biochemical tests are done along with special tests which include: Immunoassays, Tumor markers, CRP, LDH, Ferritin, D-Dimer, Thyroid profile, Renal profile, Hepatic profile and Cardiac profile.

VISION

Our vision is to excel in the field of Medical Biochemistry and to be recognized as a centre of excellence.

MISSION
  • To impart quality teaching and training in biochemistry.
  • To upgrade facilities offered in the Clinical Laboratory
  • To provide excellent patient care by providing reliable results.
  • To promote research activities in the department.
OBJECTIVES

The core values of the department are integrity, discipline, excellence, teamwork and dedication to work.

The department has pursued its teaching and research agenda in recognition of the role of biochemistry in contributing to both basic and applied research in medicine. The objective of the department has therefore been to consolidate students' understanding of biochemistry and other related disciplines and encourage them to develop intellectual independence, critical thinking skills and versatility for problem solving in biochemistry and medical sciences. This and the core values have been the guiding principle of the research programs.
