COMMUNITY MEDICINE

Health is a state of complete physical ,mental and social well-being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity. Community medicine is prevention of disease and promotion of health by peoples participation.

Community Medicine department in SNIMS was established in 2009. The department has been training MBBS students since then. Two post graduate seats in Community medicine has been allotted to the Department in 2021.

Faculty in the department are qualified doctorates in medicine in the field of community health. Each faculty has further diversified in an area that interests them and this has enabled the varying research profile of the department. Trained to be primary care physicians, researchers and administrators with the necessary clinical skills, knowledge of epidemiological and management principles, faculty have the ability to apply this knowledge for the betterment of the community. They bring about policy reforms and are on the forefront in times of disasters and largescale pandemics

VISION

The Community Medicine Department is committed to educate and train medical students to create primary care physicians who can effectively satisfy the health care needs of the community including rural communities giving importance to preventive, promotive and curative aspects.

OBJECTIVES
  • To provide quality community oriented medical education to the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students
  • To create social physicians capable of providing comprehensive care
  • To provide preventive, promotive, and curative services to the community through community outreach centres and outreach activities
  • To conduct socially relevant field-based research
  • To facilitate the implementation of National Health Programmes
Training of medical students:

MBBS - Students: from 1st semester to 7th semester (old Scheme) / 1st Phase to 3rd Phase (CBME)

CRRI - 2 Months per Intern, Department& 2 field practice areas – Rural Health Centre, Pallipuram & Urban Health Centre, N. Paravur Municipality.

MD - Community Medicine - Awaiting permission from NMC.

The department has been involved in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health programs and activities in the local community through field areas of Navabharath Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) in Pallipuram and Chaithanya Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) in N. Paravur Municipality. The field area of SNIMS at Kunnukara Panchayth also is being served.
